The foundation of this family business is based on involvement and service. “When we were growing up,” says Jason, “we ate dinner together every night. We talked about the business and what happened that day. We absorbed everything my parents said. Our involvement just grew as we grew.” A few years ago, Joe and Linda turned over most of the daily management of the operations to their children. Jason has been working full time at Market Basket since graduating from high school. He oversees the landscape and garden center for the business. Clay joined the business after college in 1996 and manages the grocery and oversees the financial dealings. Greg owns his own trucking company and hauls landscape materials for Market Basket’s landscape and garden centers. Jason credits his mom for starting Market Basket’s greenhouse and fostering its expansion over the years. Linda’s knowledge and love of plants, especially perennials, led to Market Basket’s distinctive offerings. She also was instrumental in motivating employees to become gardening experts. Even though Linda and Joe have retired and enjoy spending time with friends and playing golf, she still looks forward to each spring so she can survey the greenhouse’s bounty. Linda is truly the heart of Market Basket.

For 40 years, we’ve been your neighbors. Owner Joe Stevens started selling produce out of the back of his pickup truck in 1971, with the help of his wife Linda. Now sons Clay and Jason help manage the growing business. Because we’re family owned, with two generations serving you, we concentrate on what makes you happy, season after season, year after year. You want fresh ideas and the highest quality.

At Market Basket in Edwardsville, we recently started a recycling program with our friends and community neighbors Missouri Botanical Gardens and the Gardens at SIUE. Linda Stevens, co-owner of Market Basket, is president of the Friends of the Gardens at SIUE, which is a 35-acre public botanical garden on the university’s campus. We’ve already recycled 6,000 pounds of used nursery containers. In addition, we’ve just received a new sorting trailer for different types of containers that would have been discarded in the regular trash. We plan to expand the recycling program to our other three locations.
